Palermo guide
The city of Palermo one of the most interesting and fascinating places in the world, capital of the Sicilian region, stands on a bay at the foot of Monte Pellegrino, a headland described by Goethe as loveliest he had ever seen.
Founded by the Phoenicians Palermo was called at the beginning Zyz, a word recalling the Arabic aziz, or beautiful. Later renamed Pan-Hormus from Greek translated means all-harbour for the connotation of a safe harbour-age in all wheathers. The Romans modified this name to Panormus and it was once again renamed Balarm by Arabs, before ultimately becoming Palermo in the modern age.
